Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack historically anchored live greyhound racing in West Virginia, offering decades of pari-mutuel wagering before the facility concluded its final live race season. While live hound racing operations have officially ceased at the property, the venue continues to operate as a premier resort, hotel, casino, and simulcast wagering hub in the Ohio Valley.
Understanding the Evolution of Wheeling Island Racing Operations
The trajectory of Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack reflects broader national trends in the pari-mutuel gaming industry. For decades, the West Virginia facility operated a robust live greyhound racing calendar, drawing enthusiasts from Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and beyond. The operational framework combined live track performance with state-regulated pari-mutuel wagering, contributing substantially to local tourism and state racing commission revenues.
As market conditions shifted, consumer entertainment preferences evolved, and legislative landscapes changed nationwide, tracks across the United States began re-evaluating the financial viability of maintaining live animal racing compared to expanding electronic gaming and resort amenities. West Virginia remained one of the final states to host live greyhound racing, making Wheeling Island a focal point for enthusiasts and industry analysts alike. The ultimate winding down of live events marked the end of an era for the historic track, transitioning the venue entirely into a modern gaming and hospitality destination.
