Walgreens Photo offers standard poster prints in five primary dimensions: 11x14, 12x18, 16x20, 20x30, and 24x36 inches. Available in matte, satin, glossy, and mounted board formats, most standard poster sizes qualify for same-day pickup within 1 to 3 hours at participating store locations when submitted online or via the mobile application.
Understanding the relationship between print dimensions, aspect ratios, and digital image file resolutions is essential for producing high-quality large-format prints. Selecting an incorrect poster size or using an under-resourced image file can result in noticeable blurriness, pixelation, or aggressive subject cropping.
Standard Walgreens Photo Poster Sizes and Dimensions
Walgreens organizes its large-format photo offerings into standard enlargement prints, classic wall posters, and heavy-duty mounted media. Each dimension satisfies specific visual framing and space requirements.
11x14 Inches (Small Poster / Large Enlargement)
While technically classified between a standard photo enlargement and a small wall print, the 11x14 format is ideal for desk displays, compact wall galleries, and small frames. It features an aspect ratio of 1:1.27 (roughly 4:5), which closely aligns with medium-format photos or cropped DSLR camera images.
12x18 Inches (Standard Medium Poster)
The 12x18 inch size operates on a strict 2:3 aspect ratio, matching the native sensor output of standard 35mm film and most modern full-frame or APS-C digital SLR and mirrorless cameras. Because the frame preserves the complete camera composition, this size requires no digital cropping for standard camera shots.
16x20 Inches (Classic Medium-Large Poster)
As one of the most common sizes for portraiture, wedding photography, and art prints, the 16x20 format utilizes a 4:5 aspect ratio. It is widely supported by ready-made commercial framing options available at major art and craft retailers.
20x30 Inches (Large Format Poster)
The 20x30 inch print is the primary standard for high-impact wall art and landscape displays. Operating on a 2:3 aspect ratio, it preserves the native framing of DSLR cameras while filling large visual spaces, such as living room displays or trade show presentations.
24x36 Inches (Maximum Standard Wall Poster)
Representing the largest standard print size produced by Walgreens Photo, the 24x36 format offers maximum visual exposure. With a 2:3 aspect ratio, this scale is widely used for theatrical movie posters, retail signage, gallery exhibitions, and architectural displays.
Technical Specifications: Resolution and Aspect Ratio Matrix
To achieve optimal print sharpness, digital files must match the target print size's physical aspect ratio and provide sufficient pixels per inch (PPI). Walgreens automated kiosks and online ordering systems accept image files in JPEG, PNG, and HEIC formats, but high-resolution JPEG files saved in the sRGB color space yield the most consistent color reproduction.
The following table outlines the technical specifications for each standard poster print format available through Walgreens Photo.

Media Finishes, Substrates, and Specialty Options
Walgreens Photo provides multiple material configurations beyond standard photographic paper to accommodate different presentation environments and durability requirements.
Professional Satin vs. High-Gloss Finish
- Satin Finish: Features a low-glare, semi-matte coating that minimizes light reflections from ambient ceiling fixtures and windows. Satin paper is preferable for framed displays behind glass and environments with direct artificial lighting.
- Glossy Finish: Offers high surface reflectivity, enhancing color saturation, deep black density, and overall contrast. Glossy papers perform well for vivid landscapes and graphics, provided the display area is free from direct light glare.
Board Prints (Mounted Posters)
Poster Board Prints consist of photographic paper mounted directly onto a rigid, high-density foam core backing.
- Available in sizes such as 11x14, 16x20, and 20x30 inches.
- Eliminates the need for traditional framing by resisting bending and warping.
- Designed for easel placement, tabletop displays, or direct wall mounting using adhesive strips.
- Available for same-day store pickup at most locations equipped with wide-format flatbed finishing tools.
Peel & Stick Poster Prints
Peel & Stick options use a durable, repositionable fabric-adhesive backing that adheres smoothly to painted walls, wood, and glass without damaging surfaces or leaving sticky residue. These are available in standard 12x18, 16x20, and 20x30 inch dimensions.
Understanding Pixel Density and Image File Preparation
Achieving professional results when enlarging digital graphics or photographs to poster scales requires careful file preparation prior to uploading to the Walgreens ordering platform.
Minimum vs. Ideal Dots Per Inch (DPI)
Large-format prints are viewed from greater distances than standard 4x6 prints, allowing acceptable optical sharpness at lower PPI thresholds:
- 300 DPI (Ideal Quality): Provides sharp detail, clean edge definition, and seamless color gradients even upon close inspection.
- 150 DPI (Acceptable Minimum): Suitable for standard wall viewing (from 3 feet away or more). Lower pixel densities may produce visible softness or jagged edges along high-contrast lines upon close examination.
- Below 150 DPI: Not recommended for large posters. The online tool will trigger a low-resolution warning flag indicating the image file contains insufficient digital information.
Technical Note on Color Profiles Commercial photo printers operated by retail photo centers are calibrated specifically for the sRGB color space. Files saved in Adobe RGB, ProPhoto RGB, or CMYK (used in offset printing) may undergo uncalibrated automated conversions, resulting in dull, muted hues or unexpected color shifts in printed skin tones.
Step-by-Step Guide to Preparing and Ordering Posters
Following a structured preparation workflow ensures your digital images transfer accurately to physical print media without unintended cropping or detail loss.
- Verify Native Aspect Ratios: Compare your digital file's native aspect ratio against your desired poster dimensions. If you are printing a standard smartphone photo (typically 4:3) on a 2:3 poster (such as a 20x30), pre-crop the file in photo-editing software to control exactly which parts of the image will be removed.
- Export to Native Print Resolution: Resize your master file to the exact physical size desired at 300 DPI (e.g., 6000 x 9000 pixels for a 20x30 inch print). Save the final file as a maximum-quality JPEG with an embedded sRGB color profile.
- Upload to Walgreens Photo: Log into the official Walgreens Photo web portal or open the Walgreens mobile app. Select Posters & Enlargements, choose your desired dimensions, and upload your high-resolution file.
- Adjust the Interactive Crop Tool: Review the preview canvas carefully. Align the bounding box to ensure heads, text, and primary subjects remain within the safe print area and are not positioned too close to the bleed edge.
- Select Surface Finish and Fulfillment Method: Choose between Satin, Glossy, or Board Print options. Select your local store for Same-Day Pickup or elect to ship the final print directly to your home address.
Turnaround Times, Pricing, and Delivery Logistics
Fulfillment speeds and options vary depending on the chosen media substrate and store equipment capabilities.
Same-Day Store Pickup
Standard glossy and satin poster prints (11x14 through 24x36) as well as select Board Prints ordered before 3:00 PM local time are typically ready for pickup within 1 to 3 hours. Orders placed later in the evening are generally completed by the following morning.
Mail Delivery & Custom Orders
Specialty materials—such as specific custom collage layouts, custom banners, or non-standard framed assemblies—may require centralized lab processing. Ship-to-home or ship-to-store orders typically arrive within 3 to 7 business days via standard mail carriers.
Promotional Pricing and Cost Planning
Base retail prices for standard poster prints generally range from approximately $12.99 for an 11x14 print up to $32.99 for a 24x36 print, with Board Prints carrying a price premium due to substrate material costs. Walgreens routinely offers promotional discount codes ranging from 40% to 60% off regular poster rates, making it beneficial to verify active promotions on the main photo deals page prior to checkout.
Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting Guidelines
- Issue: Critical Content Trimmed Off Edge
- Cause: Aspect ratio mismatch between source image and chosen print dimensions.
- Solution: Pre-crop your image in an editing application prior to upload, or select a poster size that natively matches your camera sensor's ratio (e.g., choose 12x18, 20x30, or 24x36 for 2:3 camera sensors).
- Issue: Pixelated, Muddy, or Blurry Final Print
- Cause: File low pixel resolution or image grabbed from compressed web sources or messaging apps.
- Solution: Always source original image files directly from the digital camera or original cloud storage archive. Avoid using images saved from social media platforms, as they compress image data severely.
- Issue: Dark or Overly Saturated Color Output
- Cause: Display monitor brightness set too high during editing, or incorrect CMYK file formatting.
- Solution: Calibrate editing monitors to moderate brightness levels and ensure exported files use the sRGB color profile.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the largest poster size available for same-day pickup at Walgreens?
The largest standard poster size available for same-day pickup at participating Walgreens locations is 24x36 inches. This size is available on premium glossy or satin photo paper, provided the local photo department has wide-format printers operational.
What is the best aspect ratio for printing a 20x30 poster without cropping?
